Learning Objective

Given a complete sentence, students will identify the complete subject and the complete predicate.

Description

Is the topic "subjects and predicates" a new or particularly challenging topic for your students? If so, you might want to check out this worksheet and activity that will provide your students with a visual reference when identifying subjects and predicates within sentences.

This activity provides a hands-on, creative way for your students to practice identifying the subjects and predicates within sentences on a worksheet.

A brief overview of how I use the resources included in this packet:

  1. I begin this lesson by using the included TEACHING POSTER.
  2. I place the ADDITIONAL PRACTICE WORKSHEET under the doc camera, and we work together to find subjects and predicates within sentences.
  3. I guide my students in assembling an INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK page that focuses on subjects and predicates. This product includes train clip art and directions for that page.
  4. I give students the CRAFTIVITY WORKSHEET, where they identify the subject and predicate within a sentence.
  5. Finally, they begin assembling the CRAFTIVITY PIECES. Students choose a few sentences from the worksheet, and they rewrite the subjects on the train engines, and they rewrite the predicates on the train cars.

The finished craftivities make a unique bulletin board or fun school hallway display! It can also be used as a novel entry in an interactive notebook!

Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. An answer key is also included. Also, you get to choose whether to use the printable version or the paperless Google Slides format.

I designed this activity to help my students understand that a sentence is only complete when it contains a subject and a predicate. After completing this activity, students will have a visual connection in their schema that will hopefully allow them to remember how to write a complete sentence. When students write a sentence missing a subject (as some of my ELL's often do), I plan to simply remind them that they are missing "the subject engine on their sentence train".

Check out the PREVIEW to view both the printable option and the Google Slides option!
