Description
With this project, students get hands-on experience working with nets, surface area, and volume. This activity is engaging and helps students really understand 3D figures and their attributes. It is great way to practice several seventh grade skills!
The project has 6 parts plus a follow-up sheet of challenges. The parts can be assigned to individual students or partners.
- Part A: Students graph points to create a net of a rectangular prism. They cut out and create the 3D figure, find volume and surface area, and answer questions. This is a good one to do as a whole class so students get the idea.
- Part B: Next students create a cube. They create the 3D figure by cutting it out and folding it, and then answer questions.
- Parts C and D: Then students graph points to create triangular prisms. They cut them out and work with the 3D figures to answer questions about surface area and volume.
- Parts E and F: Finally students create pyramids. They work with the 3D figures to answer questions about surface area.
A large graph is included if you would like to print it for each part. Or, students can draw their own graphs on graph paper. Students will need a graph, colored pencils/markers, scissors, and tape for each part.
A guide, ideas for differentiation, extra challenges, grading checklist rubric, and answers keys are all included.
