What educators are saying

Students LOVED this. I used this for extra credit and the kids loved being able to make their mine craft character their own. It was so cool to see their character come to life and their happiness over how great it looked. SA and V worksheets were helpful too for review.
Great project for Open House at the end of the year. Students were able to explain to parents exactly how to find surface area and volume.

This activity explores calculating the volume and surface area of various rectangular prisms and then assembling the rectangular prisms into a Minecraft inspired character.

Dimensions (edge lengths) of rectangular prisms in this activity contain whole numbers and decimals.

For fractional dimensions, see other projects below:

What's included?

  • Black & white worksheets -- more artistic lesson, students can color in!

Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas 𝘝 = 𝘭 𝘸 𝘩 and 𝘝 = 𝘣 𝘩 to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
