What educators are saying

I love this resource! I appreciate how it helps students move away from the theme being just one word and expanding upon it. I also appreciate that the lesson itself (ppt + notes) is designed to be taught in a 45-minute lesson period. Thanks for a great resource!
This was a great "beginning of the year" reminder of how to recognize theme. The students were engaged and really enjoyed the tie-in with Pixar! Thanks so much for creating this great tool!

Description

Save BIG on this product and more with Disney-Pixar Literacy Bundle!!

This lesson plan acts as an introduction to theme and how to write theme statements. It teaches that theme is the message of the story, and not just one-word thematic concepts like "love" and "loss." References to Pixar and Pixar videos are woven throughout the lesson to optimize student engagement and understanding. Students practice turning the thematic concept of loss in the Toy Story trilogy into a more detailed theme statement, and they conclude the lesson by practicing writing theme statements for various Pixar shorts.

Purchase of this lesson includes a downloadable .pdf with links to a 16-slide Google slideshow, a fill-in-the-blank note-taking device for students to complete as the slideshow is being presented, a document called "Pixar Short Films: Theme Practice" and a key for that document. The key provides a short summary of each Pixar film on the document and potential themes students could pull from each film.

What people are saying about this product:

"This was a great resource to use with my students to support their learning during the school closure. I liked that I could give them the slides to help reinforce the topic of theme. I actually did a screencastify with the slides to help them. I had high engagement from my students for this activity and I will be using it again in the future."

"Great and engaging resource for my 8th graders for them to get to thinking about a theme which can be a difficult topic to grasp and beyond those one-word topics. They really enjoyed these clips especially the shorts. "

"Excellent resource. The topic matter really engaged my class and helped them deepen their understanding of theme. Thanks you."
