Description

Most students would rather eat chocolate covered worms than have to write a five paragraph essay using evidence from the text.

As teachers, we know this. But what can we do? Many state tests include text dependent essay writing.

We need students to be able to read two passages, decide on their opinion and write an essay using text evidence, reasons and examples.

That is where this mini unit comes in...

In this unit, students will learn all of the skills necessary for writing a strong opinion essay. These skills are broken down into small bite-size pieces that make it easier for our students to be successful.

Included in this unit:

  • 10 days of simple lesson plans
  • pre-made anchor charts
  • student printables and graphic organizers
  • 3 sets of paired passages
  • rubrics

Lessons Include:

  • reading and marking up the text
  • writing a strong opinion statement
  • choosing reasons to support your opinion
  • acknowledging the opposing opinion
  • choosing examples to explain your reasons
  • drafting
  • paragraphs with topic and concluding sentences
  • revising the introduction and conclusion
  • editing
  • publishing

This unit is so easy that you can easily print and start teaching with it tomorrow.

This unit is ideal for grades 3-5.
