I used this resource to compliment my 5th grade Holocaust Studies. I had the students watch the movie and used some of the questions in the packet.
I used the writing assignment at the end of this resource as a way to assess students after watching the movie. They liked creating an alternate ending since the end of the movie is so sad.

Description

This 12 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the film "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)".

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

Part 1 - Students have 20 minutes to complete this part, which will be followed on with a class discussion and sharing answers. There are 6 questions based around concentration camps, the persecution of Jews and Adolf Hitler; asking for their thoughts and feelings about certain situations regarding the Nazis.

Part 2 - Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 23 questions requiring full sentence answers.
  • 22 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers (+ Q23 needs a full sentence answer)

Part 3 – Storyboard and synopsis.

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences.
  • Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

Part 4 - Creative writing: Imagine that Bruno was caught by his father moments before going under the fence to meet up with Schmuel. The student's task is to write an alternative ending of what happens next. Include the father’s reaction towards Bruno and Schmuel.

Based on the novel by John Boyne, the movie is about the son of a German officer named Bruno who meets a young Jewish boy named Shmuel, a prisoner in Auschwitz.

- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral

part of a student's life.

Movies provides authentic and varied language

- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real

situations. This includes accents different to your own.

Movies gives a visual context

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.

To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.

Variety and flexibility

- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,

debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
