Description

Somewhere in the Pacific is a mysterious island. Government officials claim it doesn't exist. The urban legends say horrific experiments took place. Others claim monsters roam the land. Luckily for students, they're being asked to find out exactly what has happened on The Island.

A PROJECT BASED LEARNING ACTIVITY THREE MILLION YEARS IN THE MAKING.

Imagine, Create, & Develop your own story! WRITING, READING, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, ART, and IMAGINATION all in one project.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

This project includes 17 tasks with over 35 individual activities that range in writing, math, reading, research, and more.

This project is considered a “create your own adventure” and each student’s overall project will be different and unique depending on their levels and interests.

The overall objective is for students to create a story filled with characters, creatures, adventures, and depth progressing through the tasks and objectives they are presented with.

Teachers have the option of choosing which tasks they would like the students to do. With over 35 options, completing all may be tough, so teacher (or student) choice can play an important role.

Some of the specific tasks include:

-creating budgets

-making inferences

-understanding contracts

-area, perimeter, volume

-math word problems

-creating characters and details

-problem solving

-grammar exercises

-10 writing prompts with and without extra objectives

-10 word problems where students will have to show work.

On the next page is a list of all the task titles. Before each new task (in the project) there are instructions for the teacher, along with ideas to assist students in understanding the concept. Also included are “extension ideas” that teachers may want to incorporate with the class.

Included are two versions of this project:

The first is a PRINTABLE JOURNAL FORM. In this version students can write and create their own journal while the instructions for each are located on the left hand side.

The second is a TASK CARD JOURNAL.

(This is a version for teachers that may want to save some paper). Each task and objective can be printed off and given to students. They can use a writing notebook to do all of the tasks (and they cut and glue each task on the paper). Another comparison would be using it like an interactive notebook.

No matter which version you decide to use, as the teacher, you have the ability to pick and choose exactly what portions of this your students use.

**There is no rubric. There are too many ways that teachers may choose to use this which is why one is not provided.

SETTING UP:

You have the option of giving this entire packet to students at once or picking and choosing when they receive specific pages.

Or you could designate a folder/binder that has multiple copies of each tasks. Students may pick and choose as they want.

If printing is not an issue and you have a small group I would suggest printing them out and stapling or binding them together (binder) so that students will have all pages accounted for.

LARGER CREATIONS:

When tasks call for drawing maps, creating cages/pens, allow students to use larger canvasses for their work.; this could include cardboard paper or even paper bags (which give it a treasure map-type feel).

TASK CARDS for Journals:

It’s not always optimal to print 70 pages per student, which is why I’ve included this task card feature. Teachers now have the option to minimize printing, while still utilizing this entire project.

Have students provide spiral notebooks and glue tasks onto opposite pages while performing the asks on the other (much like Interactive Notebooks).

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

One of the most important aspects of this project relies on the idea that all these tasks are based on a growing story/narrative created by the student. With that in mind, as students begin to progress with their creation there should be ample opportunities to take activities further.

There will be a worksheet of EXTENSION ACTIVITIES for students to choose from. These will be a mix of hands-on and technology related items.

These activities don’t have to be done, but they could allow students to continue showing their interest and taking their learning further.

THE FINALE

By the end of this project student will have crafted a story that is in many different pieces. For those that are really motivated they may want to take all these snapshots and write their own story using all the details , characters, and everything else in between.

***Unlike many projects there is no final answer to how this project ends. Students/teachers may choose to create whatever ending they see fit (which could be coming to a conclusion or leaving this project open with unanswered questions). There is a lot of flexibility in the project which can be difficult for some students since so much information will come from student's creativity and imagination. I do realize this can be difficult for some, but that is part of the process I want my students to work through. One solution to this would be do work in small groups or have routine class discussions to assist in fleshing out ideas and helping students jump-start those high levels of creativity that they all possess.
