What educators are saying

This was an excellent resource for students to have a fun review before our unit test!! They really had to work!!
I had to leave an activity for my students to work on while I was administering the ACT, and this aligned perfectly to what we were learning in class. It was just the right amount of rigor, while still being fun and engaging, and the end result made for great classroom Halloween decorations!

Description

Students practice translations, reflections, and rotations with this transformation puzzle that's perfect for Halloween, after a test, or just for extra practice.

A graph is provided with 29 shapes along with instructions for transforming each one. If each transformation is applied correctly, the pumpkins become decorated on the student's answer sheet.

The transformations are mostly one-step, including rotating around the origin and reflecting over an axis. For a challenge, a few two-step transformations and reflecting over a vertical or horizontal line are included.

This activity is a great way to practice rigid transformations, even early in your unit. Students can spin their papers to help them see rotations before drawing them on their answer sheets. Also, the puzzle helps students find their own mistakes if their pumpkin decorations do not turn out right!

Answer key is provided.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations:
Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length.
Angles are taken to angles of the same measure.
Parallel lines are taken to parallel lines.
Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
