Description

Ahoy! Thar's different ways to teach Systems 'o Equations 'n Inequalities. Take a voyage with me! (NOTE: This project is not written in English it is written in PIRATE).

In this 21st Century Math Project, students work develop their graphing linear equations and inequalities skills through three different pirate adventures. There is a basic graphing linear equation assignment, a graphing systems of equations assignment and a graphing systems of inequalities project. A pirate crew must navigate the treacherous seas and never venture out of the shaded region (th' serpent 'o unusual size might think ye be grub!)

In this 15 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and handout resources for students to use. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***

-- In “Th’ Pirate Code Fer Laddies”, students will graph six linear equations to unscramble a code. Graphing the lines with a straightedge is essential!

-- In “X Marks Th’ Spot”, students will graph six pairs of systems ON THE SAME COORDINATE PLANE. Hence they will have to label and keep themselves organized.

-- In “Treasure Hunter” students take a five puzzle long voyage in which students shade systems of inequalities. The shaded regions are safe for traveling, and at the end of each puzzle they must pass through one of four channels. After they shade the regions they should sketch a path that keeps them safe.

Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 = 5 and 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 = 6 have no solution because 3𝘹 + 2𝘺 cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
Interpret the equation 𝘺 = 𝘮𝘹 + 𝘣 as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function 𝘈 = 𝑠² giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph contains the points (1,1), (2,4) and (3,9), which are not on a straight line.
Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context. For example, represent inequalities describing nutritional and cost constraints on combinations of different foods.
