Description

UPDATED 2023! This trickster tales digital escape room uses stories from Native American mythology and examples of traditional tricksters in pop culture to help students better understand the archetype. This fun digital breakout challenge is full of puzzles, riddles, and games that even the trickiest of tricksters would be proud of.

The breakout challenge is completely digital, Google Classroom compatible, and ready to go! The trickster tales are from Native American mythology, but some of the riddles include questions about tricksters from other world cultures as well. It has been recently updated to work around cases in which websites might be blocked for students.

The activity can be used to introduce Native American mythology or be used as part of a wider unit. Challenges will keep students on their toes, but there aren't any answers that a Google search wouldn't find. It also gets students thinking about modern trickster characters from popular films.

Use as a Native American Heritage month activity or as part of a wider mythology unit.

The activity can be done in groups or as a self-paced assignment for sub plans, flipped classrooms, E-learning, or hybrid schedules. All materials are ready to go.

Materials Include:

  • All-digital resource (Google slide with links to the escape room activities)
  • Three native American myths, including Woodpecker and the Theft of Fire, Coyote & the Origin of Death, and Raven & Coyote
  • Information about traits associated with the trickster archetype
  • Answer key

Goals for the lesson:

1. For students to familiarize themselves with examples of the trickster archetype and identify key characteristics

2. For students to learn more about a diverse group of Native American cultures and explore commonalities between their mythologies

3. For students to make the connection between tricksters from mythologies and those in modern films, TV, etc.

Terms covered include:

Trickster Character

Archetype

You can edit the activity to incorporate your own challenges, but it's ready to go as it is. Just share the link with your class!

Note: The time it takes students to 'break out' depends on the group size and if they split tasks. Groups of 3 students usually finish in about 40 minutes.
