Description

Are you in need of a daily lesson and do not have time to plan? My specialty is creating a daily math lesson that is very visual and engaging for students, with very little prep by the teacher. The prep needed for this lesson is displayed in the thumbnail.  As a classroom teacher, I loved the already made lessons; I only needed to print the necessary materials.

This lesson follows the gradual release method of instruction and focuses on multiplying fractions by a whole number word problems. It meets the the NYS Next Generation Math Standard 4.NF.4.

This lesson:

  • Can be displayed on a smartboard for whole group instruction or individual computer for small group instruction.
  • Uses a guided practice worksheet that the students work through along with the lesson.
  • By using the lesson, the teacher is freed up to walk around the room assessing & remediating as necessary.
  • Includes visuals and step-by-step instructions to help aid in comprehension.
  • Moves the student from concrete thinking to abstract
  • Includes a review of  the vocabulary.
  • Includes 1 modeled example, 5 practice problems, and 1 challenge question.
  • The final pages include classwork, exit ticket, and answer keys to print for individual assessment.
  • Some questions are based on NYS test released questions.

This product is a 77 page Google Slides Presentation that can be easily uploaded into a PowerPoint Presentation.

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
Understand a fraction 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣. For example, use a visual fraction model to represent 5/4 as the product 5 × (1/4), recording the conclusion by the equation 5/4 = 5 × (1/4).
Understand a multiple of 𝘢/𝘣 as a multiple of 1/𝘣, and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole number. For example, use a visual fraction model to express 3 × (2/5) as 6 × (1/5), recognizing this product as 6/5. (In general, 𝘯 × (𝘢/𝘣) = (𝘯 × 𝘢)/𝘣.)
Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, if each person at a party will eat 3/8 of a pound of roast beef, and there will be 5 people at the party, how many pounds of roast beef will be needed? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?
