What educators are saying

This was the perfect resource for my students to prep for the writing portion of their test. I am new to 5th and this was so helpful for me as a teacher!
All of Jennifer Findley resources are amazing and this is no exception. Great to use for test prep and writing practice for extended responses - my students always need work with this skill! Thanks!

Description

Do you need rigorous writing assessment tasks and extended response writing prompts for your 4th and 5th graders? Are your students expected to read a story and then write a new story incorporating details from the original story in their response? If you answered yes, this narrative writing assessment test prep resource is just what you need!

Our students are no longer asked to simply write narratives on state assessments. Now, they are required to write narratives in response to a stimulus or text. They must show their understanding of the given text and use that understanding in their new stories. Note: This may vary depending on your state. Please read the description fully and check out the preview to make sure this meets the needs of your particular state writing assessment.

Included in this Writing Assessment Test Prep Resource:

This resource provides several practice writing assessment/writing test prep prompts to help expose your students to the type of writing tasks described above and give them plenty of guided or independent practice.

***Sample stories and responses are also included if you wish to use these to model the tasks for your students. This modeling is powerful for students to understand expectations and see examples.

About the Writing Assessment/Writing Test Prep Tasks

There are a total of 17 writing test prep tasks included in this writing assessment resource. There are three main categories of writing tasks (make it better, write or rewrite from a story, and write or rewrite from a poem). ***Make It Better! Writing Tasks

This section includes writing tasks that require the students to read existing stories and rewrite them to make them better.

Each of the types above has a task with a completed example for the students to analyze (Analyze It!) and two opportunities for the students to practice (Your Turn!) They are labeled by type in the lower right corner of the paper. The practice texts have examples that you can use to model.

There are also two tasks in which the students use both word choice and dialogue to improve writing pieces.
