What educators are saying

My students say this is one of their favorite activities of all time. I edited the names to teachers in our hallway, which they thought was hilarious. I can't wait to use this activity again next year!
My students love these activities! I always personalize them, so they get even more excited! Rigorous and super engaging! Highly recommend! Thank you!

Description

In this activity students practice writing or translating algebraic expressions from words into "math" to solve a mystery! They use the clues they gather from correctly writing algebraic expressions to crack the case!

This item is customizable using Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can customize:

  1. The title of your mystery -- If you don't want to use the game model where the students investigate a murder, you can now change the setting to be anything you would like! Ideas that other teachers have used include a burglary, a case of mixed-up identity, what the teacher did last weekend... whatever you can imagine!
  2. The suspects, the weapons and the locations! Students enjoy seeing their teachers, administrators, rival schools, and local and national sports heroes included in their assignments.

Please note that the user is NOT able to edit the individual questions or answers.

This kit offers three ways to use this activity.

Use as a Scavenger Hunt: The download includes 23 full-color cards for you to print and hang around your room for a class activity. As students solve the equations, they look around the room for their answer to see what clue they should eliminate.

Use as an Individual Activity: The download also includes a version that has all of the necessary clue information so students can complete this activity outside of the classroom.

Use as a Digital Activity in Google Slides! Students will drag and drop the clues to the question to reveal their solution.

In all versions, the activity contains 20 algebraic word phrases, and each answer is associated with either a suspect, a tool or weapon, or a location. When a student gets the answer, that option is eliminated from the mystery. When they are finished, students will only have one suspect, one weapon and location left, and they will have solved the mystery!

Standards

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, 𝘢 + 0.05𝘢 = 1.05𝘢 means that “increase by 5%” is the same as “multiply by 1.05.”
