Students will love creating their own custom logo design by graphing linear equations, finding the slope of a line on the coordinate plane, locating the y-intercept, and writing their equations in slope-intercept form.

You will love the flexibility of this student driven project. Rigor is high but student engagement is even higher!

The purpose of the iLogo Slope Activity Project is to give students an opportunity to use slope in an artistic endeavor that has real-world applications. Every company around the globe has a logo that symbolizes their brand. Logos need not be elaborate, but they must be recognizable, and unique to the brand they represent. Students will use linear equations to create a logo that is wholly original, containing at least eight straight lines of different slopes. Students will construct a graph of their logo marking coordinates, calculate the slope of the required eight lines writing the equations in slope-intercept form, produce a full color drawing of the logo that is ready for publishing, write a short paragraph explaining the story of their logo, and compile their project for presentation.

You do the prep… students do the work. You will enjoy getting them ready and setting them free to investigate.

Students love being creative while showing off their individuality, in a collaborative atmosphere of experimentation. They will enjoy replicating a real-world application for linear equations while sharing a little about themselves and getting to know their classmates.

Identifying the slope of items, inside and outside the classroom, will become second nature as students learn through inquiry. Inquiry-based learning leads to greater retention. It’s a win-win!

Students will:

  • Create a wholly original logo.
  • Construct a graph of the logo using a coordinate plane.
  • Calculate the slope of each of the eight required lines.
  • Create equations in slope intercept form to represent the eight required lines.
  • Use positive slopes, negative slopes, zero slope and undefined slope.
  • Produce a full color, publisher ready copy of their logo.
  • Write a paragraph explaining how their logo represents them.
  • Present each facet of their project on a poster.

This project is suited for students in advanced 7th grade math through Algebra 2. It can also be completed independently if you have a student who has a planned absence. The iLogo Slope Mastery Task makes a great review of Algebra 1 skills for students beginning Algebra 2. This lesson also makes excellent sub plans if it is completed at the conclusion of the unit or as review. Begin your year with some fun! This project takes approximately three hours to complete.
