What educators are saying

I needed additional resources to use for practicing content-based reading comprehension skills with my self-contained 6th/7th history students.

Description

These are nonfiction reading passages about social studies subjects. They are based off of the second grade Virginia state standards. There are passages for each standard. They have now been updated to include all of the 2015 second grade standards. Look through the topics, because they do follow close to common core as well as some of the other state's standards. There is a below level, on level, and above level passage for each topic.
I've also included fluency trackers to record words per minute read each week. There are various levels and also a blank one in case a child reads above or below the rates given.

There are 26 topics at 3 levels each.
TOPICS INCLUDE:
George Washington Carver
Cesar Chavez
Christopher Columbus
Ben Franklin
Helen Keller
Abraham Lincoln
Thurgood Marshall
Martin Luther King Jr.
Rosa Parks
Jackie Robinson
Good Citizens
Communities
Diversity
U.S. Holidays
The Pledge of Allegiance
U.S. Symbols
Map Skills
Continents and Oceans
U.S. Land Features
Producers and Consumers
Money and Barter for Goods and Services
Human, Capital, Natural Resources
Needs and Wants
Powhatan Indians
Pueblo Indians
Lakota Indians

Each topic can also be purchased individually. Check out the preview to really see how they're set up.

This can be used as homework or as a station during differentiated reading groups. Directions are at the top of each page. The first night students read the passage and circle words they aren't familiar with. The second night they reread the passage and answer the 5 comprehension questions. The third night they have someone time them for 1 minute and write at the bottom how many words per minute they can read.

These are designed so that all students can be reading about the topic at hand on their level. Vocabulary they will need to know for each social studies unit these correlate to are incorporated into the passage.

I have many science topics, too. Check out the science passages bundle here:

Look for the third grade edition of social studies to come out soon, as well as, other individual topics.
