社會科所使用的文字與用語在孩子的生活中很難能夠遇到，他們的生活用語很少使用社會科的語言，因此，在閱讀社會科的時候，除了課文所傳達的知識必須要理解，對於社會科所使用的語法與文字更有理解的困難。本教材將五年級的社會科列舉一些題目，讓孩子畫出段落文章想要傳達的意思，傳達給孩子有些社會科的文字是在描述一個地理的位置或一個樣貌，讓孩子未來看文字知道可以輔佐圖形理解，或者在看文字的時候腦中有地圖，而不是死背文章。有些社會科的文章會將可以條列式的條件，寫成一整個段落，孩子其實很難理解一整串的段落可以變成條列式來理解，因此本教材還將一些可以條列式的段落列出，希望由孩子改寫或者是剪貼成條列式的問答題，未來在劃重點的時候就能自己劃出條列式文意。
有些文章都會問孩子『這段文章的主旨』是讓孩子練習抓一篇文章的主旨與重點，而不是全文背誦。字型與字的大小會不規則的使用，是有鑒於有些孩子認字是當圖片記憶，換一種字型或大小就會無法理解，因此變化字型與字體讓孩子習慣文字呈現的樣子不同也是在表達同一個字，編輯編排也不會有規則，甚至會有些小錯誤讓孩子自己去發現，而不是完全相信教材就該全對。

在台灣，許多家長誤以為閱讀和學習文字，主要是為了"培養孩子文學的美感"和"欣賞語文的優美"。台灣的教學一直以來都沿用這樣的方向，例如，欣賞文章作者用多麼美麗的方式敘述事情，欣賞作者營造的意境有多麼優美，整個學習過程都以「賞析文學之美」為主。然而，當孩子真的大學畢業或者進入高中大學階段時，我們會發現他們在面對現實生活中的問題時，不知道如何從書籍或文章中找到解決方法。他們從小到大經歷的訓練，大多數是將知識從課本轉移到作業和考卷中，很少有機會讓孩子們去真正理解，文本中如何找出"他人遇到的困境與解決方法"。例如我們的教學方法著重於教導孩子欣賞《湯姆歷險記》作者的活潑與幽默，而並不是以孩子的角度討論，湯姆在故事中遇到了什麼問題？又如何解決？以及是否有其它可能解決方式的角度來思考。因此，我們特意挑選了許多文章，讓孩子通過這些文章的內容思考：主角遇到了什麼樣的問題？他採用了哪些解決方法？你是如何發現的？如果是你，你會有其他的解決方法嗎？在這個過程中，請協助孩子用色筆描繪出他們認為的問題點和重點，讓孩子習慣於在文本中找出重點並進行思考，最後再描繪出解決方法和思維。這樣的學習方式有助於培養孩子的問題解決
