It is important for students to maintain their culture so that people can learn to welcome and accept them for who they are. If students are able to feel accepted, then they will feel more comfortable and confident speaking up about issues that concern them at school or in their communities. When students feel that their culture is valued as early as elementary school, there is also a greater chance that students will remain in school instead of dropping out once they get to high school. This is because they begin to develop self-esteem and pride in both their native culture and American culture.
