What educators are saying

This was an outstanding resource to add to the viewing of Encanto. A good easy explanation of GGM and Magical Realism. Good cultural resources that helped students not just watch a movie but really learn about the culture of Colombia. Thank you!
I love the movie Encanto just as much as my students so this resource was great to hone in on the culture aspect as well as the movie.

Description

¡Hola! Are you looking for a complete set of Encanto activities for your Spanish class? Have a look at our worksheets and slides. Not only do they cover the movie, but also representative cultural elements of Colombia. Perfect for Hispanic Heritage Month! And the best part is that they come in English as well :)

Quick product description

Languages: 100% Spanish. An English translation is provided as well but keep in mind that some of the worksheets (like the CI readings) will lose their purpose in the English language!

Level: There is a bit for everyone! The two readings are novice-low (La casita 1) and novice high-intermediate low (La casita 2, Bruno). The rest of the cultural activities can be completed by students of all levels. An English translation is available if the all-Spanish version is too challenging.

Format: PDF & Google Slides (shared via Google Drive) and Easel Activity. There are two digital versions of the worksheets: 1 with Easel (Spanish Version only) and 1 with Google slides (English & Spanish). Both can be shared on Google Classroom.

The worksheets

Most worksheets can be completed after watching the trailer (or reading the short synopsis called La Casita). The reading "Bruno" contains spoilers and can only be completed after watching the movie.

Worksheets about the movie:

  • Family tree : Students read a short text and fill in the family tree.
  • La casita (presente/fácil) : students watch the trailer and read a short text about La casita, the house of the Madrigal Family. The text is in present tense and is perfect for novice Spanish students. It comes with a comprehension questions (multiple choice). This reading is appropriate for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2.
  • La casita (pasado/difícil): Same text but it is in the past tense. It also contains more difficult language. Perfect to challenge Spanish 1/2 students or to practice the past tense. It comes with a multiple choice exercise. This reading is appropriate for Spanish 2 and 3.
  • La familia: descripciones (complete only after reading "La casita" or after watching the movie): this activity asks students to write a short text about different members of the family. Students write name, superpower and physical description. After the movie comes out you could also ask the students to include personality traits. Students may need a picture of the family tree in color to better describe physical appearance.
  • Superpoderes (complete only after reading "La casita" or after watching the movie): short activity on the vocabulary of the family superpowers. It also includes a little writing assignment: ¿What would your superpower be and why?
  • Bruno (lectura): reading about Bruno written from a 1st person perspective. This text contains spoilers so don't assign it until your students watch the movie! It comes with open ended questions and short writing activity. This reading is a bit more challenging than the first two. Scaffolding for lower levels like Spanish 1 (and even 2) is advised.

Cultural worksheets (perfect for Hispanic Heritage Month):

  • Elementos representativos de Colombia: activity on some of the most representative cultural elements shown in the trailer.
  • Colombia: estudio del país. Students complete the worksheet with information on Colombia. There is no answer key for this worksheet.
  • Gabriel García Márquez Versión 1: Fill-in the blanks text about the author of Cien años de soledad.
  • Gabriel García Márquez Versión 2: Research + multiple choice. Students do research on García Márquez and complete the worksheet. There are also a couple multiple choice questions. You can do Version 1 and 2 together or on their own. The answer key includes the multiple choice activity only.
  • Fauna: word search puzzle. Students search the names of the animals shown in the trailer.
  • Colombia, mi encanto (Canción): worksheet includes a reading about Lin-Manuel Miranda, Carlos Vives and a short true/falso activity.

Songs:

  • La familia Madrigal (Canción) Versión 1: fill-in the blanks, 10 words.
  • La familia Madrigal (Canción) Versión 2 fill-in the blanks, 20 words.

  • Answer Key: please note that only reading comprehension activities, the songs and the fill-in the blank exercises come with answer key.

The google slides

These google slides are meant to complement and help with the worksheets. It's the perfect visual aid! There is a couple of things that are different from the worksheet but they cover the same topics. There are no activities in the google slides (but it does come with two more karaoke slides! ;)
