Animal Classification (An ELA and Science Unit)
These wonderful activities go along great with any animal unit. They are especially great to support and enhance your science lessons on animal groups.
The reader theater scripts are two part scripts that focus on information about each animal group. There are 6 animal groups highlighted: mammals, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians and birds. The students can take turns being the different animals, learn new vocabulary and work on their reading fluency at the same time. Your students will want to perform these scripts to one another.
Besides the reader theater scripts included in this unit are worksheets that focus on comparing and contrasting, vocabulary, fact and opinion, true and false, and categorizing.
Also….
-A sorting activity where students sort pictures and facts under the correct animal group.
-Animal classification cards where students write the characteristics of that animal group on fun mini cards.
-6 posters in two different styles that include the characteristics of that animal group.
-Animal vocabulary cards and a mini dictionary where student write the definitions and the words in sentences to learn these new words. Also included a vocabular worksheet and word search.
If your students love animals they will love learning and categorizing these animals.
This unit is engaging and fun and combines science with reading and writing strategies!
*also added is a poster on arachnids and arthropods and additional animal classification cards to go along with those animal groups, to help enhance individual curriculum.
