Description

This resource helps students learn to identify character traits based on the character's actions and thoughts. The activities use fairy tales and fables that most students are already familiar with. This lets them dive deeper into the story and focus on the important character traits they encounter in the text.

WHAT YOU WILL GET:

  • 9 read-aloud fairytale stories (passages can be read independently by stronger readers)
  • 18 character cards
  • 56 character traits cards
  • "Prove It" worksheets
  • QR code cards for viewing/listening to the stories online

HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE:

Each character card has a picture and space for two traits. After reading or listening to the passage, students discuss the character and his/her actions, then choose two traits that describe the character.

The accompanying worksheet allows students to prove their thinking by citing evidence from the story. It can be used with any of the stories in this resource or others you have in your own classroom library. The worksheet is a great way to get students writing about the text and provides scaffolding if they aren't yet ready to generate their own lengthy written response.

When introducing character traits to your class, you can use one or two of the stories during whole group instruction and have students discuss it together. The rest can then be used during small group or in your literacy centers.

The stories in this resource include:

  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • The Fox and the Stork
  • The Little Red Hen
  • Jack and the Beanstalk
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • Cinderella
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • The Three Billy Goats Gruff
  • Three Little Pigs
