This is a set of activities for teaching the commutative property of multiplication. It includes both independent work and centers.

POSTERS
There are two different anchor chart posters. One includes the definition of the commutative property and the other shows students how it is used with supportive illustrations.
COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY PUZZLES
This is a set of 28 individual three-piece puzzles. Each one shows a multiplication expression written two ways (with the order of the factors switched) and the product.
Students must match all three pieces up in order to complete a puzzle. These can be used as an independent match center or in a small group.
MATCHING GAME
This activity includes 32 cards that make 16 pairs. Each pair of cards describes a multiplication situation (__ groups of __) in two different ways along with the product.
Students must match each card with its commutative property partner. Several pairs with the same product but different ways to arrive at it are included so students can’t simply find and match cards based on the product.
WORKSHEETS
These let students practice this concept in a variety of ways.
- Worksheet 1 involves coloring in arrays on a grid to match multiplication expressions.
- Worksheet 2 requires students to interpret multiplication expressions by drawing equal groups and a description ( __ groups of __ ).
- Worksheet 3 is a cut-and-paste activity in which students must rewrite an expression using the commutative property and then glue the correct product in the space provided.
DIGITAL ACTIVITIES
The worksheets have been prepared for digital use through Easel. They feature answer boxes for students to type into. The cut & paste worksheet has moveable pieces and self-checking answers.
