This is my all time FAVORITE activity for teaching context clues. It is also availble in Google Slides™ HERE. The beginning of the presentation explains what context clues are and why they are important. The lesson wraps up by having students guess what some nonsense words mean as context clues are added to sentences. Students really get into this and it also shows them how adding details to their writing makes it easier to understand! Mid-way through the PP there is a link to a video that will take you to an audio file for a Context Clues song.
The Guessing Game (4 Rounds)
Students can guess the meaning of the context clues in a variety of ways:
★ Use a Today's Meet chatroom to submit guesses UPDATE: Today's Meet has shut down. A good alternative is Padlet.
★ Write guesses on an individual white board
★ Write guesses in a journal
★ Think, Pair, Share (each round students could partner up with someone different)
