This is a set of posters created to bring Depth and Complexity down to a primary level, making it easier for second and third graders to understand and implement.
For the past several years, we have used the depth and complexity icons at our school. As a primary teacher, I, along with other primary teachers, struggled with the verbiage associated with the icons. While we loved the icons, we found it difficult to bring it down to a level where our primary students could understand and implement.
That is how these posters came to be. They are primary-friendly, visually appealing, and have questions and key words to assist younger learners, all while staying within the context of Dr. Sandra Kaplan’s original work.
Depth and complexity are icons developed by Dr. Sandra Kaplan. By adding depth and complexity to your curriculum, it will help your students go beyond the surface of their learning and dig deeper into the topic they are studying. The use of the icons allows your students to develop a greater understanding of what is being learned. Essentially, it will hope your student become an expert by learning the language and details, examining patterns and big ideas, looking for rules and trends, studying the ethics and multiple perspectives, studying how the concept has changed over time, thinking about unanswered questions you have related to the topic, and studying it across other disciplines.
When beginning with depth and complexity, it is best to focus on one or two icons and teach and learn them well. If you have used the icons for a while, go ahead and jump right in with both feet!
