This is a practice performance task (PT) but can also be used as a writing unit by itself. This resource is excellent to get students accustomed to the format and rigor of the SBAC Performance Task.

The SBAC English Language Arts test asks students to complete a writing performance task, where students read three to four research sources and are asked to analyze and synthesize this information to answer some constructed response questions and then write an informative article, opinion paper, or narrative story.

This resource includes a Google Slides Option for use with Google apps!

This resource has been created to be used with Google Slides and Google Classroom. It’s intended to be assigned to students through an online classroom portal such as Google Classroom. Your students will need individual Google accounts to use this resource!

    PRINTABLE VERSION ALSO INCLUDED!

In Part 1 or Task #1, students will read three sources.

Next, answer three constructed response research questions for the sources. In Part 2 or Task #2, students will be assigned a prompt for ONE mode of writing, narrative, opinion, or informative. You will need to pick which mode of writing you want to use and then delete (or do not copy) the other writing mode directions.

You can also completely randomize which prompts students receive or assign groups of students different modes of writing.

When using the print version, print out the black and white booklet (or color). If your students have never completed a writing performance task, then you should complete this as a whole class or allow students to work in groups to complete the reading and research.

It is best if this is split up into multiple lessons over the course of days or it can even be used throughout an entire unit. If you teach standards-based writing, this resource is amazing for gathering data and teaching directly to the standards!

The digital version of this resource is perfect for any classroom online or in-person! If you have one-to-one devices, skip the copier because everything is included as a digital Google Slides option!
