What educators are saying

My newcomer first grader is really enjoying this workbook - he even asked me if I could send one home with him to work on over the summer!
I used this recourse with my newcomers and it was so helpful. They enjoyed using the packet and continually asked to do it. I like that the activities use repetition so students can get familiar with the vocabulary.

Description

ESL Newcomer Activities - this ESL vocabulary workbook (U1) is designed to provide language building activities for beginning English learners (newcomers) during independent class time, or small group instruction. Students will learn and practice using basic “everyday” vocabulary as they complete the workbook activities.

Activities are designed so that newcomers, or students with limited English vocabulary, are able to work on them independently, with minimal support.

There is a no-prep, print and go version AND a digital Google Slides version included!

This unit (Unit 1) contains six topics. Each topic has a reference poster and several practice pages. Students use the reference poster to independently complete the practice pages.

Topics include:

Colors

Shapes

Days of the Week

Months of the Year

Seasons: Fall and Winter

Seasons: Spring and Summer

During independent work time in reading or writing workshop, beginning ELLs need meaningful activities that they are able to complete with minimal teacher support. This resource provides them with exposure to, and practice with, basic vocabulary. Incorporate the activities into small group instruction with your beginning ELLs for additional support in building their English language skills.

NOTE - For International teachers outside the U.S., a workbook with alternative spellings for "color" and "gray" (colour and grey) is also provided. Modifications to the Months of the Year Poster (American holiday symbols removed) and Seasons of the Year poster (specific months removed) are included.
