Description

If you’re looking for a fun and engaging science activity that can be adapted for Christmas or Halloween or for the days or weeks before any holiday including back to school, then challenge your upper elementary, middle, or high school students to design and color an earth science craft/ornament! They can use facts about themselves (such as family, hobbies, foods, etc.), earth science topics (such as the water cycle, weathering/erosion, the 3 types of rocks and the rock cycle) or any other any other earth science topic they enjoy! It can even be used for science vocabulary, units, or topics you are currently learning about! Even design one for any of the holidays!

Ideas for use:

  • Decorate the earth science scenes and display them for Open House
  • Bring a Christmas Tree to school and hang them up
  • Display them on a bulletin board or clothespin them on a line
  • Vote on the “ugliest” ornaments and give out a prize
  • Offer as extra credit for students or use as a time filler

Directions: (see attached images)

  1. Color all 4 scenes. You can assign specific directions so the ideas are endless!
  2. Cut out around the OUTSIDE of the images first (not along the dotted lines).
  3. Fold in half and cut out the rectangular center piece. Be sure to cut along the dotted lines above the scene as well. You will see long dotted lines there.
  4. Open the scenes back up and fold towards the colored side.
  5. Glue the insides together.

Optional: Hole punch and attach a ribbon to hang it or simply stand on a table!

If all else fails, you can cut them out individually, fold them in half, and glue all four flasks back to back to get the same effect. If you have any questions or require further assistance, feel free to email me at professordoubter@yahoo.com.
