What educators are saying

I absolutely love this resource! All the planning is already done with everything laid out so well. My students love the shared reading activities.
I have been so unhappy with my district's shared reading resource. This is kid friendly and easy to use. I already have the writing all year from this seller and I LOVE it. I KNEW this would be just as user friendly, student centered and fun to teach!

This Resource in a Nut Shell:

This Shared Reading resource was created with top-notch teaching in mind.

We have SO MANY standards to cover and SO LITTLE time. So we’ve done all the planning for you and put teacher talk directly on each slide. Literally, just click and teach.

Each unit contains 4 eBooks that are slightly above grade level (to challenge your more advanced readers). Because the reading of these books is repeated for 5 days, and because it’s done with support (read aloud, echo reading, choral reading, Readers Theater) your average and struggling readers will be able to engage in the learning activities in a non-threatening way – building their self-confidence as readers.

You’ll receive 5 copies of each ebook. Each unit has a different genre focus. Each day you engage in the shared reading experience, students will reread the text with support (and simultaneously build fluency) and engage in a variety of standards-based learning activities.

    =============================================================================

Throughout the year your students will learn:

    • to answer both "just right" and "inferential" questions and support their answers with text evidence

    • about a variety of text features (labels, captions, headings, glossaries, etc.)

    • how to use context to figure out the meaning of complex vocabulary words

    • identify the main topic of a text as well as the key details

    • to engage in a retelling activity

    • to identify the main character(s), setting, problem, and solution

    • to identify the moral of a story or central message

    • to identify how some words and phrases evoke different feelings

    • and so much more....while simultaneously building fluency with each reread!

    ==============================================================================

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN EACH OF THE 9 UNITS:

    • 20 scripted standards-aligned shared reading lesson plans – just skim the lessons prior to teaching and you’re set.

    • 4 Colorful, engaging eBooks (no need to purchase books!)

    • The ONLY thing you need is an interactive whiteboard and you’re set. Nothing to print out and NO additional resources to purchase.

    • Each page of the eBook has teacher talking points on the bottom of the slide, no lessons to print out. Even a sub can teach these lessons in a snap.

We started with the nonfiction unit and the rich vocabulary, and engaging texts are truly wonderfully crafted for first graders up. Participation has gone through the roof! Kudos for creating such a beautifully engaging resource for learners of varying abilities. FAQ

    What is shared reading?

Simply put, shared reading is a time the whole class gathers together and engages in a reading experience as a classroom community. It’s different from a read-aloud in that the reading is shared. After the first day, which is a read-aloud, students engage in reading the text with their peers and teacher in a variety of ways (choral read, echo read, readers theater). Each day there is a new learning focus.

How long does shared reading take?

Do not belabor this, it should take approximately 15 minutes or less a day. Keep it zippy and highly engaging.

    Who participates in shared reading?

This is whole class activity – GREAT for building classroom community.

Should shared reading be done daily?

    Yes!

Will I need to purchase books?

No! We’ve made ebooks for the lessons. They can be printed out, however, we recommend using a digital tool.

Is a Google Slides version included?

Yes! We have included a link to a Google Slides version on slide two of each PowerPoint.

Can this be used for Distance Learning?

Due to the collaborative nature of this curriculum, it's best to use it in a classroom setting. However, it can be used with distance learning using a platform such as Zoom or Google Meets. Because this activity involves student engagement, it's important that this is used while students are present with you in a virtual manner.

Is a Google Slides version included?

Yes, we have a link to the Google Slides version on page two of the PowerPoint.

What a typical week looks like:

This is a weekly example from Unit 5. Each unit has four stories. You'll receive 5 copies of each story. Each day different learning standards are focused on. Students also reread the story throughout the week in a variety of ways (listen to reading while the teacher points to the words in the text, echo read, choral read, Readers Theater) to build fluency and automaticity with sight words.

    • Day 1 – Read the story to students – focus on comprehension and enjoyment of the story as well as identify the main topic of the text and learn about the glossary

    • Day 2 – Echo Read story with students – students answer questions and provide text evidence for their answers

    • Day 3 – Choral Read story with students – students engage in identifying key ideas of the text using picture clues

    • Day 4 – Readers Theater activity – students engage in vocabulary work

    • Day 5 – Read the story to students or choral read – students engage in a Cloze Reading Activity
