What educators are saying
Description
This reading comprehension resource helps students learn to discriminate between the main idea and supporting details. It can be completed fully online!
There are 8 two-part activities in the file:
- The first page/screen of each set features a short informational passage or story. Students will read the passage and then use the text to answer comprehension questions.
- The second page is a main idea graphic organizer. Students drag and drop four statements from the text and onto the graphic organizer to show which is the main idea and which are the supporting details.
In most of the passages, the main idea is explicitly stated. However, in several it is implied. There are plenty of details in the text to help readers determine the main point.
Some of the comprehension questions are open-response with text boxes already inserted for students to type their answers. Others are multiple choice with drag and drop pieces to select the answer.
While these activities are designed to help teach main idea, some of the comprehension questions include practice with other reading skills as well including:
- sequencing
- cause and effect
- making inferences
- using context to determine meaning
The Google Drive file includes the main resource file for students plus a separate file for you that includes answer keys.
This activity is perfect for independent practice during centers or as a distance-learning activity at home.
