This unit comes with a bonus item - a gratitude journal full of positive emotion prompts that will last an entire school year if used by your students once a day.

This unit covers healthy and unhealthy relationships with yourself, with friends, with family, with romantic partners, with intimate partners, with school staff and teachers, and with your community. It covers mental well-being, self-care, and the lack of mental health awareness. It covers bullying, cyberbullying, and discrimination. It covers personal boundaries, how to protect yourself, how to escape abuse, online safety, online predators, and consent. We cover it all!

Lesson 1 (A Healthy Relationships Warm Up): In this first lesson, we'll kick things off with a bang! Here's what's in store: A unit overview - Get a sneak peek into what we'll be exploring throughout the unit, discussion prompts designed for students to dive into thought-provoking conversations about healthy relationships, and a Kahoot quiz to get the class pumped up about the fun unit to come!

Lesson 2 (Relationship With Me/Self-Care): This lesson is a self-care lesson for students to learn healthy coping strategies to manage stress and other negative emotions. This lesson will be full of discussion and interaction, one of my favourite lessons to teach! Students will learn from their classmates, and will get the opportunity to think about what well-being really looks like to them. This lesson is focused on each student making a “wellness toolkit” - a foldable display full of healthy coping strategies and reminders of positivity, that can be used throughout the unit. Students will fill out their very own wellness toolkit as they learn throughout the lesson. The wellness toolkit includes a mosaic pattern that students can colour or shade in to help with calming.

Lesson 3 (Relationship With Me/Grounding): This lesson is the second that focuses on self-care and healthy coping strategies to manage stress and other negative emotions. Students will learn and practice various grounding strategies, and they will spend much of the lesson doing a unique group activity where they will learn how to ground themselves through a surprising one of their five senses: smell. This lesson will be full of discussion and interaction, past students have adored this lesson!

Lesson 4 (Respect in Relationships): This lesson on respect in relationships will be sure to help turn your classroom into a community. Picture this: students gathered in a circle, diving headfirst into the realm of healthy relationships with discussions on respect for friends, family, teachers, and most importantly, what it takes for students to feel respected. Your class will spend time creating a classroom charter together based on respect - a collaborative masterpiece that will set the tone for the entire unit and year. Ending off with a circle game to practice respect, this lesson will help your students shine and be kind, whether it is done stand-alone or as part of the unit.

Lesson 5 (Friendships): This lesson is an explosive blend of fun, creativity, and friendship exploration! In this lesson, students will dive into a ball-toss game that will have them on their toes and ready for action. But that's just the warm-up! The main event, "My Hypothetical BFF," is a collaborative art project that requires zero special materials. Imagine a world where students can not only discuss but physically manifest the healthy qualities of best friends and friendships. Throughout the lesson, students will be immersed in reflection and writing, uncovering the positive qualities that make friendships thrive. And here's the kicker – the lesson underscores the absolute importance of communication in cultivating healthy relationships. Get ready to make friendship the star of the show in your classroom, whether this lesson is stand-alone or part of the unit.

Lesson 6 (Family Relationships): Gear up for an unforgettable lesson that shatters stereotypes and celebrates the kaleidoscope of family structures! Picture this: each student armed with the tools to recognize the obstacles they have been through in life, and how they overcame these challenges both physically and emotionally. We're spotlighting the importance of acknowledging and cherishing the support systems that have been there in the past and those waiting in the wings for the future. Get ready to redefine the way students view family, resilience, and the incredible strength that comes from within and around us!

Lesson 7 (Family Web Project): Get ready to uncover the rich tapestry of your family's history with our Family Web project. This unique and engaging activity invites students to dive deep into their family tree, stories, and memories, creating a web that celebrates the bonds that tie us together, and helps students understand who they are. Through interviews with family members, students will gather firsthand accounts, anecdotes, and insights, filling in any gaps in their knowledge and deepening their understanding of their family's journey.

Lesson 8 (Social Issues Inquiry Project): Get ready to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing our communities with our Social Issues Inquiry Project. This dynamic and impactful initiative invites students to dive deep into a wide range of social issues, from bullying and cyberbullying to loneliness, mental health support, discrimination, gender equality, and online safety. Lesson 9 (Romantic Relationships #1): Get ready for a lesson that's as thrilling as the twists and turns of romantic relationships. In this lesson, students won't just dip their toes into the world of romance; they'll dive headfirst into a game that's equal parts enlightening and entertaining. Buckle up for a journey where students uncover the non-negotiables that should ALWAYS be present, identify the red flags that should NEVER be tolerated, and explore the nuanced, in-between aspects that add spice or toxicity to a romance. This lesson delicately eases students into mature topics surrounding romantic relationships. Get ready for an experience that'll leave students buzzing with insights and excitement!

Lesson 10 (Romantic Relationships #2): Brace yourselves as students embark on a journey challenging common misconceptions of relationships, discovering that there's no one-size-fits-all order in a healthy relationship. What they're learning? It's all about the power of communication, emphasizing that before any step, talking it out is the real MVP! The excitement ramps up with a game of "Red Light Green Light." Picture this: students in groups or flying solo, assessing a laundry list of romantic situations. It's not just a game; it's a high-stakes mission where students will learn to decipher between warning signs and green flags, all while becoming relationship detectives and uncovering the secrets to successful connections.

This will be an immersive adventure where students decide, create, and embrace their own boundaries. This lesson is a revelation, emphasizing that personal boundaries are like the superhero capes of healthy relationships. It's not about restrictions; it's about empowerment. And we're not just talking the talk; we're walking the walk by showcasing that everyone, absolutely everyone, has their own set of boundaries, and that that's not just normal; it's necessary.

Lesson 12 (Commercial Creation Project): Get ready to shine a spotlight on healthy relationships with our exciting PSA project! In this engaging endeavor, groups will have the opportunity to create a captivating public service announcement (PSA) that promotes awareness about toxic behaviours while celebrating the importance of healthy relationships. Picture an electoral ad pitting 2 candidates against each other - Only for walking green flags and walking red flags.

Lesson 13 (Abuse in Relationships #1): Buckle up for a lesson that every student really needs to hear: how to fight against abuse. Students won't just be listeners; they'll be investigators, armed with questions that will help them stay safe and keep others safe in their long and complicated process of growing up; What does abuse really look like? What can I do if I find myself trapped in its grasp? What are the telltale signs of an abusive relationship, and how can we break free? What are my rights in a relationship?

Lesson 14 (Abuse in Relationships #2): In this lesson, students won't just hear about toxic relationships; they'll be thrust into the very pages of a book that unravels the gripping tale of partner abuse. Imagine a class that's not just about words on paper but a collaborative experience that transforms every student into a detective against intimate partner violence, toxic behaviours, and the shadows of abuse. Students will learn about the secret phases of abuse, the ones that no one talks about. What are the secret phases of abusive relationships, and where do we find the strength to resist?

Lesson 15 (Consent): Gear up for an extraordinary lesson that turns the crucial topic of consent into a dynamic and empowering experience! Students won't just hear about FRIES (Freely given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, and Specific); they'll become masters of consent, unlocking the secrets of what it truly means and why it's an absolute must. But hold on tight – we're not just diving into the heavy stuff; we're transforming it into a captivating journey.
