What educators are saying

This is an excellent resource. I like that there are so many different activities for idioms. I think I like the idiom dictionary the best. I like having it for review to see if there are any idioms that the kiddos are still struggling with.

Description

This is a 130+ page unit for Speech Therapy and Special Education teachers alike! 30 of the most common idioms are targeted using multiple activities, with visuals for each one!

Idiom Full Screen Slides

This file contains full screen idiom task cards. It is recommended that you use these cards as a whole group lesson. You may chose to view this file using an

overhead projector or by using this on your iPad, using a program for “No-Print” activities, such as OneDrive, Google Docs, Kami, or Notability. This file is for TEACHING idioms as a whole group lesson!

Task Cards

Then, use the task cards for individual use! Pair with any reinforcing activity (board games, tokens, etc.) or use in centers. You can also use the task cards for progress monitoring! Laminate and keep them together using binder rings. Students can mark their answers using dry erase markers! This file contains 4-to-a-page idiom task cards.

Idiom Worksheets

  • Idiom Matching (p. 2-4) Match the idiom with its figurative meaning.
  • What Could You Say (p. 5-7) Read the scenario and tell what idiom you could use in response.
  • Find the Idioms (p. 8-9) Read the short passages and find the idioms within each one.
  • Puzzle Cards (p. 10-17) Read the idiom and match it with its literal and figurative meanings.
  • Roll an Idiom (p. 18-22) Create a cube, roll it, and tell the literal and/or figurative meanings (or make a sentence using the idiom you rolled!)
  • Write a Sentence (p. 23-25) Write a sentence using the idioms provided.
  • Data Collection (p. 26) Use this sheet to track data on understanding and use of the idioms. (USE FOR PROGRESS MONITORING!)

Idiom Dictionary

  • Pre-filled idiom dictionary pages (p. 2-17)
  • Blank page to write in idioms of your choice (p. 18)
This is for students to keep in their folders as a reference. Have students write what they THINK it means vs what it ACTUALLY means. Have students draw a picture to remember the idiom. Have students write a sentence using the idiom. Keep as a handy reference for all of the idioms they've learned so far!

*If you've previously purchased my "Idiom Dictionary", it is different from the one included in this product. It has been updated to contain the 30 idioms used throughout this product, and has gotten an overall facelift.
