Description
This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about multiplication and division with multi-digit numbers. In this 5-day unit, students will multiply and divide multi-digit numbers to feed pets at an animal shelter. This multi-digit multiplication and long-division math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of multiplication and division and is aligned with the following 5th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6
Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

What's included in this resource:
•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge about animals shelters and rescue pets.
•Multiply by Single Digits: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to multiply multi-digit numbers by single digits.
•Choose Pets: Students will choose up to ten pets to rescue at the animals shelter.
•Calculate Food Needs: Using concepts of multiplication, students will calculate the total food needs for the animals in the shelter.
•Multiply Multi-digit Numbers: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to multiply multi-digit numbers.
•Collect Donations: Students will collect donations of pet food and calculate the total amount of food collected using multiplication strategies.
•Long Division: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to divide multi-digit numbers.
•Comparing Amounts: Using concepts of multiplication, students will compare the amount of donated food to the amount of food needed for the shelter pets.
•Finalize Food Amounts: Using concepts of long division, students will determine how many more bags of food are needed for each rescue pet.
•Thank Donors: Students will compose a letter thanking donors for their contributions to the animal shelter.
•Wrap Up: Students will write up their final animal shelter plan and explain their decisions.
