PART 1 – Comprehension questions. There are 15 questions altogether. I have made two sets for differentiation. One set is multiple-choice and the other is long answer and are both in chronological order with answers.
The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.
PART 2 – Creativity
• Students to imagine they have magic like Matilda and write how they will use this power to help their friends. Afterwards they draw a picture showing their magic in action.
• Students imagine they are Matilda and write a diary entry for a day when Miss Trunchbull came to their class.
• Students to list 5 books they want to read, and then write what’s interesting about each book and why they want to read it.
Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, this movie is about the story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.

How can movies help students learn English?
Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study
- There are a huge number of movies that have been adapted from books which allow for book to movie comparisons or simply as a reward for finishing the book.
Learning from movies is motivating and enjoyable
- Sometimes students need a change in style, and movies are generally an integral
part of a student's life.
Movies provides authentic and varied language
- It's always a good idea to introduce students examples of English in real
situations. This includes accents different to your own.
Movies gives a visual context
- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context.
To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.
Variety and flexibility
- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions,
debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarising.
