What educators are saying

This was a great activity to get the kids up and moving around the room discussing pictures with one another.
This was a great resource to dig deeper into the life of the Eastern Woodland Native Americans. We live in the midwest and my students enjoyed hearing about the Native Americans from around where we live. This helped to meet the curriculum standards.

Description

Each Native American Region is unique and should be taught separately. The Eastern Woodlands Region is fascinating for students!

Contents of this mini-unit:

Teacher Notes

Eastern Woodlands Region Map

Passage 1: Overview of the Eastern Woodlands Region and the Importance of Trees - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 2: Jobs of Men and Women, Family Life, and Hunting, Farming, Gathering, and Fishing - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 3: Warfare, Protection, and Eastern Woodlands Social Structure - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Passage 4: The Iroquois Confederacy and the Algonquian People - Includes a cloze passage to help students process the information.

Gallery Walk: This is a low-prep primary source activity. Simply print one copy of each of the six primary source pages and make a copy of the recording sheet for each group. These photos were taken many years after contact but we can still get a good idea of Eastern Woodlands life by examining them.

Project Choice Board: I require my students to complete two of the projects listed on the choice board. Completing these projects helps my students to dive deeper into the information presented to them while using their critical thinking skills. I don’t use rubrics with these projects because there are eight different project choices. That would be a grading nightmare. Instead, I grade the projects holistically, looking for accuracy, effort, and creativity.

Quiz: I use the quiz as a final assessment for the mini-unit. The quiz is fill-in-the-blank with an answer bank.
