How to use this News Article Summary Graphic Organizer:

This News Report Summary Outline is a scaffolding framework for teaching students essential literacy skills. Students are introduced to the Five Questions Model (W5-H), a reading comprehension strategy and writing framework that is applicable to any informational text.  This model provides students with a framework to interpret the structure of news articles.

You can begin this lesson by reading through an article together.  A link to an article from The University of Toronto’s student news publication, The Varsity, has been included; however, this lesson can be facilitated using any news report.  Using the News Report Summary Graphic Organizer, you can complete the outline collaboratively to model each component of the Five Questions Model (W5-H).

The News Report Summary Outline includes explanatory prompts for each section of the graphic organizer.  These prompts will support students with their independent reading and summarizing.  You can instruct students to locate and select a news report from a publication like Newsela or Teaching Kids the News.  Then, they can complete the News Report Summary Graphic Organizer independently.

A Differentiated News Report Graphic Organizer has also been provided.  This outline includes additional scaffolding prompts and sentence starters.
