What educators are saying

I have used GridWords in my Geometry class for years, so when I started teaching Alg I again I wanted to use it for them as well. The assignments are great ways to differentiate so they can be as challenging within a skill as needed. The Alg I Gridwords has not disappointed.
My students enjoyed this resource! They were able to work together, which was fun. They challenged each other to locate the answers. Great resource! Thank you.

Description

Evaluating Expressions & Simplifying Expressions (Using Order of Operations) - Fun Practice / Review

This set of 6 differentiated worksheets offers a fun way for your students to practice simplifying expressions using order of operations (or "PEMDAS") and evaluating for variables.

**This resource is also available in a DISCOUNTED bundle: Expressions & Equations Bundle

If they shade/color all the simplified results correctly, a "GridWord" is revealed. Have your students act it out (sing, hop, etc.) or record it for a quick check.

The first 3 puzzles require students to simplify algebra expressions using order of operations (at different difficulty levels).

The next 3 puzzles require them to evaluate the expressions by plugging in for the variables, then simplify as well (at different difficulty levels).

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
