    Description

Studying Plato’s Republic helps students learn valuable critical thinking and debate skills. This product will help students develop self-reflection skills, become comfortable expressing their opinions, and understand the power of combining logical argumentation and effective persuasion.

Socrates believed that to understand a topic fully, one should engage in deep inquiry. Socratic Seminars enable them by involving group discussion, critical thinking, and clarification of concepts from all participants. The HOTS activities will challenge students to go beyond memorization of facts into a deeper understanding of the text as they evaluate complex arguments and discover higher-level meanings within the text. Furthermore, textual analysis on Plato’s Republic Book I will provide further context for understanding.

Three products combined at a 30% discount:

Everything you need is here - over 85 pages and 27 SLIDES - see the preview for more details or click the links for each product.

    TEACHER TIP:

You don’t need to teach entire works, just short excerpts of the Great Books, to engage students in complex, higher-order thinking and other essential skills in the new CCSS guidelines.

You could begin with the Socratic Seminar, then turn to the Textual Analysis section, and finally to the HOTS unit. This progression of the units from easiest to most difficult works well, or you could focus on one or two of the units one semester and change it the next - this helps to prevent the sharing of student answers. You could also use this as an emergency substitute lesson plan - it would last for over a week.
