These worksheets are intended to help students approach poetry. They are designed to scaffold the process of interpreting, analyzing and comprehending poetry. Moreover, these worksheets were designed to be visually attractive and academically engaging for secondary school students.
These worksheets can be used with any poem and cover the following:
Guided Reading of a Poem Worksheet: This worksheet guides students through the process of pre-reading, reading, initial response and deeper analysis of a poem. This can be used for individual study.
Compare and Contrast Two Poems Worksheet: Learning to compare and contrast is an important skill for students to acquire, so why not incorporate it when teaching poetry? This worksheet contains a table for students to directly compare two poems in terms of content, structure, tone and language.
Responding to a Poem Worksheets: These two worksheets are designed to get students responding to a poem in a creative and engaging way. There are some boxes which are imaginative, such as visually representing the poem, choosing colors to symbolise the poem etc. (because secondary students still need to exercise their imaginations!), and some which are more academic.
Analyzing the Meaning of a Poem Worksheet: When I ask my students, ‘what does this poem mean?’ or ‘what is it about?’ they often don’t know where to begin. This worksheet will help scaffold their understanding of the content of a poem, particularly if it is a more complex poem, with a figurative meaning.
Examining a Poem Worksheet: These two worksheets will help students take notes when scrutinizing a poem, and will hopefully provide a method template they can use whenever they study poetry.
Identifying Figurative Language in a Poem Worksheets: These two worksheets will help students identify, name and explain the different figurative language techniques used in a poem.
Imagery Worksheet: Poets often employ a lot of imagery in their work. This worksheet will help students examine a poem in terms of the figurative language and sensory images used by the poet.
