Description
About this resource:
This document contains 3 Parallel Lines & Transversals activities designed to be used once angle pairs with parallel lines have been introduced to students. The first activity is simpler, while the second is challenging for some. Both are fun activities and a great way to reinforce angles formed with parallel lines. The third activity uses two parallel lines cut by two transversals to enhance rigor.
Activity 1: Parallel City 1:
In this activity, students are given 8 different building (bank, park, etc.) and are asked to place one of them on each corner of Parallel City. They are then asked to identify the buildings based on their angle relationships with parallel lines cut by a transversal. A Parallel City map sheet is provided for this activity with two parallel roads and one transversal road.
Activity 2: Parallel City 2:
In this activity, students are given 7 construction clues (Your house and the park are alternate interior angles) and are asked to place them on the Parallel City 2 map sheet according to the directions. The map MUST fit all of the directions. A Parallel City 2 map sheet is provided for this activity with three parallel roads and one transversal road to increase difficulty.
Activity 3: Parallel City 3:
In this activity, students are given a map of Transversal Town (Parallel City's sister city!) and given 20 questions to answer using the map. Questions include identifying the parallel lines and transversals, finding matching angle pairs, finding angle measures, and using Algebra to find missing measures.
A possible solution for Parallel City 1 & Parallel City 2 is provided. It is important to note that other solutions are possible! Parallel City 3 answer key provided as well!
Note: When my students do this activity, I don't just have them write the building names on the appropriate street corners. I have them make a picture that represents the building. For example: A dollar bill and money signs for the bank, or a swing set and a tree for the park. They also must use color. My students seem to take the activity more seriously when they can make their map their own.
