What educators are saying

Who doesn't love a lab with skittles? great visual for the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Excellent resource. Good way for students to see that matter is not created or destroyed, also a good way for students to trace Carbon.

Description

Teach cellular respiration, photosynthesis, the law of conservation of matter, reactants and products with this hands on and engaging lab! This lab has been a hit with my students for years and is a perfect way to make these complex science concepts lots more fun for students and easier for you!

Check out the PREVIEW for an idea of everything included in this engaging lesson!

I created this lesson for my 8th grade students, but other teachers have used this lesson with more advanced lower grades, or as a review for high school students.

Teaching this lab takes approximately two to three class periods. That amount of time includes teaching lab, class starter, and QR code enrichment activity (as a point of reference I teach a 50 minute class). My students love this lab; the fact they get to make chemical equations using Skittles makes it even better!

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • A Skittles based lab covering photosynthesis, cellular respiration, reactants, and products.
  • A close reading passage explaining the lab topics
  • Full teacher keys
  • A QR code based review perfect for interactive notebooks or posting in your classroom
  • A class starter (bellringer) covering the photosynthesis reaction
  • Teacher notes on how I've taught this lab effectively in my classroom
  • Additional resources and web links to expand and reinforce learning

Next Generation Science Standards covered:

MS-PS1-2, HS-LS1-5, HS-LS2-5, HS-PS1-2, HS-PS1-7

These standards are covered by using a model to illustrate photosynthesis, using a model to illustrate chemical reactions, using a model to illustrate that atoms are neither lost or gained in a chemical reaction.
