Description
Alma - a short film literary element study that students will actually WANT to do!
❤AWARD WINNING PIXAR-like SHORT FILM: ALMA
This spooky workshop focuses on how a professional writer uses literary elements to foreshadow trouble. Students learn that literary elements interact to shape the story and will use these elements to create an alternate ending.
LITERARY ELEMENTS/DEVICES:
- FORESHADOWING-Students learn specific foreshadowing techniques
- MAKING INFERENCES-Searching For Clues
- PLOT-Creepy plot elements that foreshadow trouble to come
- SETTING-Changes in the setting foreshadows trouble to come
- ALTERNATE ENDING WRITING ACTIVITY-Students used techniques learned to create their own foreshadowing.
This spooky film is about a small girl whose soul becomes trapped inside of a doll. She wanders into a deserted town and is lured into a doll shop by a doll in the window that looks just like her. The name ALMA means “SOUL” in Spanish and foreshadows what will happen to her.
Students will learn how the writer ties in several literary elements such as setting, plot, and the title, to foreshadow this story. They will learn the difference between a guess and an inference through questions asked BEFORE and AFTER watching the film, and they will have a BLAST creating a dialogue script for the dolls on the shelves.
This workshop culminates with a guided writing activity whereby students will write an alternate ending to the last scene.
In the last scene, a new doll appears in the window, allowing the viewer to imagine the whole process of trapping a child will begin again. Students can re-imagine an ending with the new character. They will be guided to use foreshadowing techniques in their stories.
