- The purpose of the Rate of Change Activities Bundle is to give students the opportunity to use creativity to analyze, graph, and solve rate of change problems in real-world settings. This bundle includes three unique tasks: First Car Mastery Task, i-Logo Slope Mastery Project, and the Raising PuppiePrice $7.00Original Price $11.00Save $4.00
Description
Build engagement with this task centered on raising adorable puppies. Students will calculate the theoretical rate of change for puppy growth using a t-table, a graph, and a slope-intercept equation. They will then discover the experimental rate of change for puppy growth and compare the outcomes to make predictions. With six low-prep versions of the task, your students will soon be confident and competent in using algebra to find real-world solutions.
Raising Puppies Mastery Task gives students an opportunity to use the rate of change in a real-world context. Students will calculate and apply the rate of change to determine the growth of a Bernedoodle puppy. They will create data tables, graphs, and linear equations to find solutions, display results, and make predictions. Linear equations will be written in slope-intercept form. This task adds depth and complexity to the understanding of the rate of change in real-world contexts as students use and compare various methods of calculation.
You do the prep… students do the work. There are six versions of the task, each version has the same context but different numbers. These tasks are perfect for collaborative class activities, individual proficiency practice, homework assignments, quizzes, or end-of-unit assessments.
The following downloads are included with this unit:
- Instructional Guide for Teachers
- Six versions of the Raising Puppies Student Worksheet
- GATE version Raising Puppies-The Proposal Student Worksheet
- Answer Keys for all six versions
- Seven Extension Ideas
- Raising Miwok - an independent extension worksheet for advanced students
Raising Puppies Mastery Task is appropriate for use with upper-level middle school students and any level of high school students. This task addresses the following common core standards: HSA-SSE.A.1, HSA-CED.A.1, HSA-CED.A.2, 8.EE.B.5, 8.EE.C.7, 7.RP.A.2, 7.EE.B.3, 7.EE.B.4, MP1, MP2, MP4, MP5, MP6, and MP8. Students should already know how to multiply with rational numbers. This project takes one to two hours to complete based on a student's mathematics level. It is easy to split into shorter lessons or break up for use within a full unit on linear equations or functions.
Students will:
- Calculate the puppy’s growth rate.
- Determine the puppy’s weight at birth.
- Design a table of values using x for the independent variable and y for the dependent variable.
- Make predictions based on the table of values they designed.
- Create a graph of the puppy’s weight over time.
- Make predictions based on the graph they created.
- Build an equation in slope-intercept form that represents the growth of their puppy.
- Make predictions based on the equation they created.
- Compare and contrast the benefits of tables, graphs, and equations in this scenario.

What other teachers like about the Raising Puppies Mastery Task…
“Great and easy to use project!” – Alexa Z.
“Thank you for another great activity that gives students an engaging real-world situation in which to practice problem solving. This activity has multiple versions and built-in differentiation. Fun for kids and easy for me. I plan to allow my advanced students choose between Raising Puppies - The Proposal and the Raising Miwok extension version. I am going to use the extension ideas for sub plans while I am away at a conference.” -Matthew H.
“Easy to use and easy to follow directions.” - Kim S.
