Description
I love using primary sources to get kids thinking critically about history! In this hands-on activity, students sort primary sources based on whether they think they represent problems Virginians faced during Reconstruction or solutions or changes that helped them rebuild the state. This sorting activity makes a great introduction, review, or performance task during your Reconstruction unit!
Students will:
- read background information on the Reconstruction era in Virginia
- work collaboratively in small groups to analyze ten primary sources related to Reconstruction
- sort primary sources
- share thinking during a class discussion
This activity is subjective, so as long as students can justify their thinking, there may be more than one correct answer. That said, a suggested answer key is included for you to use during classroom discussion.
Included are the following materials:
- Teacher Notes/Answer Key (2 pages)
- List of Primary Sources with Hyperlinks
- Problems and Solutions/Changes Headings
- Ten Primary Source Cards
- Student Worksheets (3 pages)
- Optional Student Reflection Sheet
This resource supports Virginia Studies VS.8.
