Recommended for any grade or discipline as there are 2 poster options available–coloring (for lower grades) and drawing (for older students/art students). Plus, there are a variety of bonus resources included in this product for early finishers or as extensions.
Option #1: Coloring Ruby Bridges Collaborative Poster
This lesson is very easy and is ideal for elementary-level students. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color in according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored & cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large (28 in. x 35 in.) multi-colored mosaic/poster/mural of Ruby Bridges that well-captures the essence of this courageous child. There are 30 pieces in this poster.
Options #2: Drawing Ruby Bridges Collaborative Poster
This lesson is not complicated but is more challenging than the coloring version in Lesson #1 and would be best suited for middle school and high school students with some advanced upper elementary classes. In this lesson, each student will draw their grid piece using a small version of their assigned grid cell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual grid cells to line up well and produce a nice looking final (28 in. by 35 in.) poster of Ruby Bridges.
The results from both options are stunning!!
BONUS Activities:
Group collaboration posters are a lot of fun and leave a lasting impression. However, students don’t get to walk away with anything tangible to show their families. I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. This is also very useful for early finishers.
The handouts are for various levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:
- Unscramble the portrait drawing.
- Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations).
- Ruby Bridges coloring page.
I hope your students enjoy this collaboration poster and, no doubt, all the meaningful conversations that will come from it.
