Description
Sensory Poetry is all about getting your reader to feel as if they are in the place you are describing by using SENSORY LANGUAGE. The Beach Poem is a perfect summer school activity. You'll easily be able to teach your students how to write a 5 senses poem with these fun and engaging poetry writing crafts! Also includes a grading rubric. Great for Summer School!
When sensory language is used effectively, you can almost smell, see, hear, taste and feel what a sensory poem is describing. Not sure how, check out the 5 senses poem examples.
HELPFUL TIP: Bring in some popcorn, fresh fragrant flowers, etc. to really hook your students into your unit. Once students master this concept, they will be looking for those important SENSORY words in the poetry they read as they move through elementary school.
HERE'S THE PLAN
Modeling – It’s All You!
Choose one of the example poems and model it for your students. Take it from brainstorming to final piece using the 5 senses poem templates. Think out loud so they will get the process. Have all the pieces of your celebration cut out to make this part go fast. You might lose them if you spend time cutting it out while they wait.
Guided Practice – Everyone!
Choose a poem from the packet and do it together while getting input from the students and guiding them through it. Do the same as above, but let them get involved this time.
Independent Practice – It's All Them!
Choose a different poem from the packet and have them do it independently. Use the grading rubric to grade it if desired. Once complete, celebrate with the craftivity!
This resource includes 7 Sensory Poetry sets. Each set features Brainstorm and Plan, Write and Celebrate. There is also a 5 Senses Poem example of each poem and what the celebration will look like.
The 7 Sensory Poem Topics:
• Spring
• Popcorn
• Ice Cream
• Christmas
• Easter
• Beach
• Autumn
Have fun with this GREAT UNIT!
