Description

This is a set of reading activities for learning about similes and metaphors. They can be completed fully online!

Students will identify each type of figurative language, find examples within text, and use them in writing.

Includes:

TASK CARDS (Google Forms)

Students will read a piece of text, identify similes and metaphors within it, and interpret their meaning. Includes 12 multiple-choice task cards that are automatically graded. Can be used as an assessment or for independent practice.

SIMILE/METAPHOR SORT (Google Slides)

Students will read sentences and identify the simile or metaphor in them. Next, they drag and drop the sentences onto a graphic organizer to show what type of figurative language they contain.

SIMILES AND METAPHORS IN CONTEXT (Google Slides)

Students will read a short passage and find examples of figurative language. They will then complete a chart showing what the simile or metaphor said and what the author actually meant.

USING SIMILES TO COMPARE (Google Slides)

This is a drag-and-drop activity in which students complete similes by choosing the best descriptive phrase.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF WITH SIMILES (Google Slides)

Students read an example of an acrostic poem using similes. Then, they will write their own to describe themselves.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN POETRY (Google Slides)

Students will read two short poems, identify examples of similes and metaphors, and explain the meaning.

ANSWER KEYS are included.

The Google Drive file includes the main resource files for students plus a separate file for you that includes answer keys.

This activity is perfect for independent practice during centers or as a distance-learning activity at home.
