Syllable Word Building Activities

This Syllable Word Building resource is a grade 1 to 3 activity that focuses on building words from syllables, a critical foundational skill necessary for reading success. Students will practice blending the syllables together to form commonly used multisyllabic words.

The Syllable Word Building lists are compiled into six groups that are arranged by color: Blue, Green, Orange, Purple, Yellow and Red. Depending on the needs of your students, you can give them one page at a time, which allows them to create four multisyllabic words. If your students need more of a challenge, you could provide them with both pages for the color group, allowing them to create eight multisyllabic words. This allows for easy differentiation in your classroom.

These are completely student-centered activities. Student can cut out their own syllable cards, build their words or play memory, fill out the student worksheets, and independently check their work.

Directions and student worksheets are included for syllable word building and a memory game.

An extension to this activity is that students could write a story with one of the words or put syllables together to form and practice reading nonsense words.

This could also be utilized for older students struggling with decoding and phonics skills.
