Description

350+ pages of print and digital resources! This product includes everything you will need to teach the popular, inspiring memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls including ready-to-go digital materials for Google Classroom/distance learning! Everything in this bundle has been tested out in my own classroom and deemed successful for engagement, challenge, and accuracy. It is guaranteed to save you A TON of time.

This resource just had a HUGE update! If you have purchased this unit previously, please re-download the resource to get all of the new materials!

I have created a wide range of engaging and creative resources in this bundle that you can choose from. Forget about teaching a novel the same way over and over again so you're burned out after a year or two. You will be able to mix up and try new things every year with the amount of resources in this product! I provided a clear pacing guide that uses majority of the materials for those who like having structured plans. For teachers who love variety to choose from, this bundle is a great resource for you as well.

This product is bound to help students connect with the novel through creative materials and think bigger while you have little to no prep work to do!

ITEMS INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT BUNDLE:

1. Unit Plans Part 1- Detailed Reading & Discussion Guide for Teacher:

  • Bellworks and quizzes labeled and organized on calendar
  • Essential questions
  • Teaching aspects
  • Literary elements
  • Topics/themes in novel
  • Symbols in novel
  • Objectives for unit
  • Overall unit notes and ideas

2. Unit Plans Part 2- Detailed Reading & Discussion Guide for Teacher:

  • Very thorough discussion guide for ENTIRE novel
  • Detailed Teacher Notes/Teaching Aspects for ENTIRE Novel: When I read through the novel, I essentially took detailed notes so I would not have to re-read each section the night before teaching it. I took the reading and separated it into sections in which I wrote out a summary of each section and then a detailed analysis. The analysis focuses on different scenes in the reading that serve as teaching aspects, how the section ties in with the rest of the novel/scaffolding, and in-depth/thoughtful discussion questions to use with your class as you read. Instead of re-reading the book before class, I just look over my summary and analysis notes before class.
  • Answer key for questions for discussion guide

3. Daily (25) Engaging Bell Ringer Journal Prompts: PRINT + DIGITAL

These journal prompts are the perfect way to start class each day that you read/study The Glass Castle. Each bell ringer relates to the section's reading and gives students a chance to put themselves in the Walls' shoes, promoting engagement.

6. The Glass Castle Symbolism Analysis Journal: PRINT + DIGITAL

Engage students in the analysis of important symbols in the novel with their own symbolism journal with colorful or black and white tabs for organization! Each symbol in the journal will prompt students to read and comprehend a critical thinking question associated with each symbol. Using this critical thinking question, students will then determine the meaning of the symbol based on the text they read. Lastly, students will be prompted to explain each symbol and include a quote from the text to support their answer.

Symbols in this journal that students will be analyzing:

Cactus in Desert

The Prospector

Fire

Mountain Goat

★ Joshua Tree

★ Stars

★ Margarine

★ Walls' Vehicles

★ Welch House

★ Trash in Glass Castle

★ Braces

★ Miss Bivens

★ Oz the Piggy Bank

★ Jeannette's Geode

★ The Glass Castle

★ Turbulence and Order

7. Writing Projects/Assessments: PRINT + DIGITAL

  • Unit-Long Parent Analysis Project: This project went amazing in my classroom! Students have the opportunity to pick different events in the novel and create a portfolio on the Walls family to analyze the parenting of Rex and Rose Mary Walls. This project promotes critical thinking, citing evidence, inferential questioning, and deep analysis.
  • Create Your Own Memoir: This is a great way to end the novel, The Glass Castle. By the end, students are experts on what a great memoir is. This writing project asks students to create their own short member, focusing on a single memory or event and telling it with the depth and emotional detail that Jeannette Walls does. This also helped me understand my students and where they come from as well. The memoirs in my classroom turned out beautiful!

8. Quizzes and Answer Keys + BONUS Trivia Games: PRINT + DIGITAL

Includes 6 in-depth (covers ENTIRE novel) quizzes that follow the following format:

  • Multiple Choice
