This presentation for teachers is a set of five video tutorials that provides a BRIEF overview of the NGSS Science Standards, what "better" science teaching looks like, and the basics of how to navigate, download, and implement an OpenSciEd unit. In a nutshell, you will have a better understanding of how science education is changing and have a no frills overview of this trending program! As both an NGSS and OpenSciEd teacher, I give you a short and sweet rundown of the tips and tricks to getting started! Save yourself the pain of searching through countless informational website, YouTube videos and longwinded webinars and get to the point with this simple tutorial. Here is a 4 minute PREVIEW!

This tutorial is a 5-part video series with a slideshow included. It includes video links embedded within a Google Slides presentation.

Part 1: What are the NGSS & what is better science teaching? (26 mins)

  • My qualifications as a teacher
  • How to read and understand the NGSS and website (includes additional YouTube link)
  • Graphic on how to read the NGSS
  • What "better" science teaching looks like (ideas from Ambitious Science Teaching book)

Part 2: What is OpenSciEd and how does it align? (22 mins)

  • Why OpenSciEd
  • Scope & Sequence
  • Instructional Model (Using storylines, starts with an engaging phenomenon, modeling, DQB, gathering evidence through investigations, making sense of data and reasoning, engineering design process, and assessments)

PART 3: How to navigate the OpenSciEd website (24 mins)

  • How to access, understand, and utilize the website (creating a username and password is FREE!)
  • How to find, download, and save the units
  • Understanding the resources that come with each unit. For example, the teacher edition includes what students do/figure out, the lesson snapshot, materials list, where the lesson is going/not going, prompts and responses, assessment ideas, and sample work while the unit overview includes the storyline, PEs/standards, lab safety, teacher background, SEPs, CCCS, how to modify/shorten/extend, etc..

Part 4: Overview of the HEALING/CELLS UNIT (38 mins)

  • Introduce the outline of the unit (2 lesson sets)
  • Step-by-step guidance through the teacher edition and unit overview (see part 3 for more info)
  • How to modify/edit the unit
  • Assessment ideas

Part 5: Resources to support you! (6 mins)

  • Links to finding phenomena ideas (if not using OpenSciEd)
  • Link to Geology Unit outline using phenomenon of beach sand
