Building Blocks Handout for Five Paragraph Essay Writing
This handout lays out the Building Blocks of 5 Paragraph Essay Writing. There is a block for each paragraph, and inside each block are the details that should be included in that particular paragraph of the essay.
For example, the first block is titled: Paragraph #1: Introduction. It notes that the introduction should include an attention grabbing sentence, background information on the topic and the thesis statement. The second block discusses the first body paragraph and so on.

Based on the MEL-Con graphic organizer designed by Jim Schiferl, this MEL-Con has been cleaned up to create more writing space for students, include a writing prompt box, and eliminate the color-coded boxes so that it can be readable after duplicated. I was having a great deal of difficulty teaching my kids how to use transitions to craft their writing. After giving a lot of thought., I came up with a way for them to practice using the transitions and help them learn revise/edit strategies for the STAAR test at the same time. They enjoyed doing this and I saw some lightbulbs go off after we did it a few times.

This is a graphic organizer for students to use when writing a simple 5 paragraph informative essay. The first page has all sections on it while the following pages are broken down by paragraphs. Some students do well with the one page while other students benefit from the larger spaces. There is a place to track page numbers. The last sheet has a place to put notes for citations.
