10 Things I Hate about You Film (1999) Study Guide Movie Packet

The following twelve-page study guide film packet is used to accompany the Gil Junger-directed 1999 teen romantic comedy "10 Things I Hate about You" that is a modernized adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and stars Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It can be used in an English or film studies classroom. The first page contains a list of cast and crew and a background and introduction on the film from Wikipedia. The second page is a page that allows viewers to jot and take down their own notes. Pages three, four, five, six, seven, and eight contain comprehension questions to guide the viewer on the work's camera movement, characterization, cinematography, color symbolism, conflict, costume design, dialogue/diction, editing, foreshadowing, inferences, irony, mood, motifs, plot, props, set design, slang, sound, story, subtext, symbolism, and themes. The ninth page contains discussion questions on the work's characterization, feminism, genre characteristics, and setting. The tenth page is a genre study page on coming-of-age films and what characteristics of the subgenre are evident in the film based on its subject matter, style/technique, and ideologies/morals/themes. The eleventh and twelfth pages compare the film to Shakespeare's play and asks students to compare the two works, compare the characterization and character archetypes between Shakespeare characters and teen film archetypes, understand the allusions, and appreciate how Shakespeare's works are still relevant in stories today.
